Movies on the Beach During Summer

Parents will love Virginia Beach’s very family-friendly vibe throughout each of its districts, from its beach communities to its urban sections to its farmlands. Along with safe, clean beaches, the City is full of beautiful parks and top-notch attractions. With so much to see and do in Virginia Beach, there’s no time to waste with summertime boredom. Get the entire family engaged in a variety of fun events and activities while in town. Keep reading to learn what entertainment is coming up this summer and beyond.
Everybody will enjoy Chalk the Walk on June 14 from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. at the Virginia Beach Boardwalk spanning from 16th to 18th Streets. Experience this creative competition either as a spectator or a participant. (For those interested in participating, there will be free on-site registration from 10 a.m.-12:30 p.m., however, space is limited.) This year’s theme will be “Starring Roles” in celebration of characters in films, televisions, books and games. The friendly competition has three divisions—Amateur, Professional and Youth (ages 12-16)—so there are opportunities for all ages and skill levels. Watch in amazement as the Virginia Beach Boardwalk becomes blanketed in colorful chalk drawings.
Experiencing the 4th of July in Virginia Beach is a must-do. Each year the resort city puts on a spectacular fireworks display, so start making plans to attend the July 4 Stars & Stripes Celebration on July 4 at the Virginia Beach Oceanfront. Free and open to the public, this family-friendly event features live concerts held at 17th, 24th and 31st Street Parks, followed by a fireworks display at 9:30 p.m. Stay tuned for the entertainment lineup to be announced soon.
Beach Blanket Cinema is another popular event the whole family will enjoy at the Virginia Beach Oceanfront. This free movie event series runs throughout the summer on select Thursday evenings on 29th Street on the beach. “Moana 2” kicks off the movie series on June 19, followed by “Wonka” on June 26. Not to be overlooked, the ViBe Creative District also holds all kinds of interesting and free events, many of which are both kid- and pet-friendly. On Saturday mornings (most of the year), local vendors line the community’s streets at the Old Farmers Market. Other regular events to look for include the Old Beach Art & Eco Market, Singer Songwriter Saturdays and art tours including #FirstFriday Walking Tours and Second Saturday Walking Tours. There are many ways to experience—and support—local art in Virginia Beach, and the ViBe District is a top go-to for the City’s art scene.
Along with amazing events, Virginia Beach is full of extraordinary attractions the whole family will find captivating. Many of these attractions offer special events and features that provide heightened experiences. Hunt Club Farm is a favorite farm destination in the area any time of the year, but also consider attending one of the farm’s special events such as Harvest Fair and Haunted Club Farm in the fall, and Santa, Smores, and More! during the winter. Another holiday-related activity perfect for the family is seeing the NUTCRACKER! Magical Christmas Ballet, playing on Nov. 26 at the Sandler Center for the Performing Arts.
The Military Aviation Museum and the Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center are also favorite family destinations that also offer special events, tours and experiences.
