Virginia Beach is a destination full of fascinating history, including its rich maritime heritage and strong military ties. Visitors are invited to learn more about the City and its surrounding region by attending local events and having history-filled experiences. Below are ideas for interesting ways to get better acquainted with Virginia Beach.

With our nation’s 250th anniversary celebrations underway, this is a superb opportunity to explore our country’s past. Sail250® Virginia, June 16-19, is a commemorative event that visitors and locals alike will not want to miss. An international fleet, including more than 50 tall ships and historic vessels, will be positioned near the Lesner Bridge. This is something the whole family will want to experience!

Other patriotic events with a 250th anniversary focus include July 4 Stars & Stripes Celebration (July 4), the 42nd Annual Independence Day 5K (July 4), the 14th Annual 757 Battle of the Beers (Sept. 12) and the 2026 NAS Oceana Air Show (Sept. 19-20).

Along with high-quality events, Virginia Beach offers captivating history experiences. The City’s rich maritime heritage is on full display at the Virginia Beach Surf & Rescue Museum and the Atlantic Wildfowl Heritage Museum. Both are conveniently located at the Oceanfront and have free admission. Spending time at the Military Aviation Museum, which showcases WWI and WWII aircraft, is also an outstanding learning experience to consider.

Also consider touring one of Virginia Beach’s historic museum houses like the Thoroughgood House (1719), the Lynnhaven House (1725) andthe Francis Land House (1805).

Tip: Check local listings for special events at these local attractions. In addition to experiencing the museums, the museum events offer a fresh perspective of the past. Mark your calendar for the Pig & Oyster Fest, Oct. 25, at the Virginia Beach Surf & Rescue Museum. In addition to tasty oysters, BBQ and live music, this event is a great way to show your support for the local museum.
