Located just south of the oceanfront, Croatan Beach is a popular surfing area located in a residential part of town. First Landing State Park’s beach, on the beautiful Chesapeake Bay to the north of the oceanfront area, is another beach that families enjoy. Nearby Chic’s Beach has a more laid-back beach atmosphere where the locals tend to go for some beach time. The bay’s calm waters makes it the perfect spot for stand up paddleboarding, floating on rafts and other low key beach activities.

The resort city is home to two state parks including False Cape State Park and First Landing State Park, which is Virginia’s most visited state park, as well as a variety of other terrific parks. Now is an especially great time for a visit as the museum recently completed a major renovation to its South Building, so there’s even more to explore.
