Outdoors
Not a surprise, spending time at the beach tops the list of favorite things to do in Virginia Beach. The resort city has a number of beaches to choose from, each with their own distinctive personality. The Virginia Beach Oceanfront is a family-friendly destination offering visitors a wide selection of water recreation on the Atlantic Ocean including swimming, surfing, jet skiing, parasailing and so much more. Fishing charters and boat tours are also high in demand, with nearby Rudee Inlet as a central hub with watersports outfitters offering all kinds of expeditions on the water. Located just south of the oceanfront, Croatan Beach is a popular surfing area located in a residential part of town. Further south along the coastline, Sandbridge Beach is a family-friendly beach full of convenient amenities including a fishing pier, playground, picnic areas, public restrooms and more.
First Landing State Park’s beach, on the beautiful Chesapeake Bay to the north of the oceanfront area, is another beach that families enjoy. Nearby Chic’s Beach has a more laid-back beach atmosphere where the locals tend to go for some beach time. The bay’s calm waters makes it the perfect spot for stand up paddleboarding, floating on rafts and other low key beach activities.
Outdoor enthusiasts will feel right at home in Virginia Beach. The resort city is home to two state parks including False Cape State Park and First Landing State Park, which is Virginia’s most visited state park, as well as a variety of other terrific parks. Kayaking and canoeing, hiking and biking, and birding. It’s all here in Virginia Beach!

The Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center is a short drive from the oceanfront and is a family-friendly attraction where it’s easy to spend several hours discovering interesting facts about marine life. This premier aquarium is full of fascinating wildlife, interactive exhibits, observation windows, behind-the-scenes tours, boat tours and much more. Now is an especially great time for a visit as the museum recently completed a major renovation to its South Building, so there’s even more to explore.
