October is National Seafood Month
In Virginia Beach, you can always expect fresh, local seafood. With water sources including the Chesapeake Bay, Atlantic Ocean and Lynnhaven Inlet, amongst others, locally caught eats from the sea has never tasted so good. We are excited to be celebrating National Seafood Month this October, as Virginia Beach has always taken pride in the local seafood industry.
Oysters and crabs (specifically blue crabs) are wildly popular in the area. The Lynnhaven River has an abundance of oysters, and many restaurants also stock up on Chincoteague oysters, freshly harvested from the Eastern Shore. There are tons of places suitable for crabbing, however some of the most common include the pier at Chic’s Beach, the Virginia Beach Fishing Pier and the pier at Sandbridge Little Island Park.
Celebrate National Seafood Month in Virginia Beach to not only enjoy delicious local catches, but also to commemorate the sacrifice and adaptability that many of our local seafood companies endure to constantly provide safe, fresh seafood for Virginia Beach natives and tourists.
The anglers are also lucky because there’s plenty of fish in the sea! Your chances of catching a fish in Virginia Beach are looking pretty good. Fish are bountiful in the fall, with October being a peak month for Red Drum, Dolphin, Rockfish, Flounder, Yellowfin Tuna and more. Other Virginia Beach beauties you might reel in include Speckled Trout, Tautog, Wahoo, Swordfish and many others. There are numerous fishing charters that will take you out on the open waters or you may fish off one of the local fishing piers.
